January 3 - February 12, 2012
Two-time Tony and Oscar nominee Kathleen Turner sizzles as Molly Ivins, the brassy Texan reporter whose liberal journalism skyrocketed her to the national stage. From writing Elvis Presley’s New York Times obituary to becoming the most widely-read self-proclaimed “pain in the ass to whatever powers come to be,” Ivins, often described as a modern-day Mark Twain, made rabid fans and enemies alike with her sharp-tongued humor and unabashed political criticism. This acclaimed show captures the redheaded reporter’s indomitable character by weaving personal anecdotes with her colorful take on national politics.
Fresh Air: Remembering Columnist Molly Ivins - Live interviews with Ms. Molly Ivins herself, originally aired on Oct. 3, 1991 and Oct. 7, 2003.

Elvis Presley Dies; Rock Singer Was 42 - One of the most remembered pieces of Molly Ivins was her 1977 Elvis Presley obituary published in New York Times.

“A genuine thrill ride!” – The New York Sun
Congressman Dan Ferris is being questioned about the disappearance of his intern, Ilona Waxman. Sound awkward? Imagine if he were your dad! Loosely based on actual events, this perplexing and playful study of power-politics throws expectations to the wind and pits perception against reality as a brother and sister search for the truth about their father, who has fallen under suspicion of closed-door sexual improprieties – and worse. And if that weren’t enough, things really heat up when Monica Lewinsky arrives on the scene!

“SANTALAND” is an outrageously funny one-man play (from NPR’s David Sedaris) about the author’s experiences as an unemployed writer taking a job as an elf at Macy’s. At first the job is simply humiliating, but once the thousands of visitors start pouring through Santa’s workshop, he becomes battle weary and bitter, occasionally taking out his frustrations on the children and parents alike.
For those who like a little spice with their Christmas sugar, this tale of mass marketing, stressed out sales clerks, drunk Santas, screaming kids and the general insanity of the holidays is hilarious, witty, sardonic and unpredictable; mercilessly cutting through the Christmas spirit to point out what crazy things we do as human beings during the holidays.
“If you’d like a bracing dash of bitters at this sticky-sweet time of year, you might want to belly up and drink in the fun….If you’re in the mood to get goofy and giggle, don’t deprive yourself of this holiday treat.”
- F. Kathleen Foley, LA Times

Santasia — A Holiday Comedy is a perfect blend of Yuletide snark and sentiment. Produced and created by certifiable siblings Shaun and Brandon Loeser (ImprovOlympic) and their band of misfit elves present a freewheeling holiday romp. Santasia comedy sketches are being compared to old time Vaudeville and to the likes of the “Kid’s in the Hall” and “the Carol Burnett Show”…this multi-media holiday special has it all!

IRIS from Cirque du Soleil - A Journey through the World of Cinema

This new production from Cirque du Soleil is a lyrical, fanciful, kinetic foray into the seventh art. Bringing together dance, acrobatics, live video, filmed sequences and animation, the show takes spectators on a fantastic voyage through the history of cinema and its genres, taking them into the heart of the movie-making process. From illustration to animation, black and white to colour, silent films to talkies, fixed shots to swooping camera movements, spectators witness the poetic construction/deconstruction of this art as an object and as a way of transcending reality.

DOUBLE FALSEHOOD is the story of Henriquez, the son of a Duke and traveling libertine who wreaks havoc on a small community. Impulsively, he not only rapes a young woman, Violante, but also manages to send his best friend Julio away, meanwhile wooing Julio’s fiancé Leonora for his own wife. This “double falsehood” sends the four young people on a journey of passion, grief, and madness in the wilds of the countryside. Of debatable authorship, DOUBLE FALSEHOOD was only just recently accepted into the canon of Shakespeare’s works by Arden, and is believed to be possibly based on Shakespeare’s lost play CARDENIO. Full of heartache, violence and romance, as well as surprising moments of comedy, DOUBLE FALSEHOOD is in the classic mode of the Pastoral, but with a dark twist.

Wily West Productions presents the world premiere production of Juno En Victoria, a tragicomedy of manners that places the Greek pantheon in a Victorian country setting, where preparations are underway for the marriage of Hebe, Hera’s daughter, to Heracles. But the sisters’ lives are complicated by Zeus’s interest in the beautiful maid Iris, as well as the cheeky groomsman Ganymede who needs to learn his place. Overshadowing it all is a greater scandal that could destroy the family. tickets and info at http://www.wilywestproductions.com/
June 9th through July 2 2011
Written by Stuart Bousel
Directed by Claire Rice
Designed by: Quinn Whitaker, Miriam Lewis, Wesley Cayabyab

Jim Leonard’s haunting drama, The Diviners, is a richly textured play of Americana, set in the Depression-era mythical town of Zion, Indiana. It is the story of Buddy Layman, a 14-year old boy, who has a magical gift – “a blessing,” the local farmers call it: he’s able to predict the weather, rain in particular, and can divine water with a divining rod. Saved from childhood drowning by his mother, who died in the rescue, Buddy has also developed an all consuming fear of water.
Into the local garage, owned by Buddy’s father, wanders a back-sliding Kentucky ex-preacher, C.C. Showers, suffering from that bane of holy men, doubt. “Thinkin’ and preachin’ don’t mix too well,” he says, but there’s no escaping the demand of the religious starved town. As C.C. gets to know the colorful citizens of the town and comes to understand their strong relationship with the earth, a growing sense of trust develops between him and Buddy, culminating in a stunning climax, when the towns’ women mistake a scene of washing, for a baptism.
It is a play dense with emotion and humor, friendship and love, hope and faith. It will stay with you, long after you’ve left the theatre.
JD and Liz continue their discussion of John Marston, The Malcontent, and everything in between.
The Malcontent, by John Marston runs April 28 - June 19 at The Antaeus Company in North Hollywood, California.
DOMA Theatre Co presents a sexy, seductive twist on Joe Masteroff’s Tony-winning musical, “Cabaret”. Set against the backdrop of pre-World War II, the show takes place inside a provocative, yet forbidden Kit Kat Klub, where the relationship between cabaret performer Sally Bowles and the handsome American Cliff Bradshaw flourishes only to face social taboos and the imminent rise of the Nazi Party.
Overseeing all of the action in Cabaret is the Master of Ceremonies (Emcee) of the Kit Kat Klub, who serves as a cultural metaphor and the upbeat catalyst to the ever-changing climate of the show.
Reflecting the moods and guiding the minds of the characters on stage, the Emcee takes pleasure in reminding the audience how easily society falls prey to the electrifying chaos that surrounds them. Best to leave all inhibitions outside of the Klub.

A super-cool trailer for last year’s revival of “Inherit the Wind” from Action! Theatre Company. “A classic courtroom drama that stands the test of time, Inherit the Wind puts on trial our perceptions of what is “right” and “wrong”. Although the play is a fictional re-creation of the Scopes “monkey trial” of 1925 — in
